This evening the Miccosukee Village at Big Cypress Bend had a fire that totally destroyed their beautiful chickee shop. I drove by and was extremely saddened to see the burnt remains of it. I have some articles from the news included below.
The chickee shop can be replaced, but the crafts inside that were lost would represent thousands of hours of labor to make items such as patchwork clothing, palmetto dolls, or hand carved cypress wood toys.
This shop sold crafts made by the local Seminole and Miccosukee people. I don't know if they had joined the Miccosukee Tribe, or remained independent like several of the villages along the Tamiami Trail who have never joined either the Seminole Tribe or Miccosukee Tribe.
This was the only Seminole or Miccosukee craft shop that I know of that is not on a reservation. It was the last of its kind, as one of the village tourist spots along the Tamiami Trail that sold crafts for income. This is very upsetting.
