Last year I highlighted this great book by James Hammond about the history of eastern Collier and Hendry Counties, "Florida's Vanishing Trail". I sadly heard today that the author died suddenly. He was not old and will be missed. His work on locating Seminole War sites was phenomenal. If you click on the link of the title of the book, you will find it is still for sale by lulu.com.
Above is the Fort Shackleford monument that Hammond photographed. The monument was placed there by D. Graham Copeland in the 1940s. It is on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation and you can't visit it.
